Math Can Be Cool

By Peta-Gaye Reid

Can you imagine your child never getting an 'A' in math? Can you imagine constantly paying for extra lessons in math for your child until he/she is 18 years?

Listed here is a scenario products transpires with a child when he/she is a math exam.

Question 1: x + 1=4. What is the value of x? child: "x = ?" child: "oh my gosh I have no idea what to do!!!". child: " I'm scared!!! I'm scared!!! I'm worried!!! Mom is going to kill me if I flunk this test".

child: " Do you know what, I am just planning to ignore that question. After all it's just one question. Which don't cause any harm" child: "OK next question 10y=30. Precisely what is y?". child: "WHAT!!! This can be even harder compared to first one".

child: "Ignore this question".

The ignoring of questions continues until the exam ends. Then the child gets a failing grade. Most parents can't understand why their child's math grades are poor. They are faced with the harsh reality that their child is not doing well in math. Most times they panic and spend frantically on books or extra lessons to no avail.

Some parents get so frustrated that they blame the math teacher because of not teaching the niche properly. Unfortunately, playing the blame game doesn't solve the issue. Like a parent your child's performance in school will be your responsibility. No-one will enjoy or care for your child just as much as you do.

I know that you have been spending a lot of money to improve your child's math grade. I know that sometimes you feel frustrated. There are ways to improve your child's math grade but you have to get involved. A common problem that I have realized with most children is that they had problems grasping a concept because they didn't understand the basics. LEARNING THE BASICS IS KEY.When you ignore the basics you are teaching the child how to run before he/she learns how to creep. When a child understand the basics, math will become easier and fun.

A great process that you can use to teach math to your child is:

1) Show your child that math is cool, fun and easy. 2) Remove all of the negativities about math from your child's mind. Do a little question together to prove this. 3) Begin with the fundamentals. This is where most children fail. 4) Tell your child that there are more than 1 solutions to solve a math problem. Show your child the various approaches when solving an issue. Most children get confused when different teachers teach them different approaches. Your job is to tell your child that in math there are very different approaches which they may use the approach they are happy with. 5) Communicate math in your child with all the language that your particular child loves as an example use jokes or acronyms like LOL, :-). Simply make it exciting. 6) Reward your child when their performance in math improves. This can motivate your child to complete better. 7) Keep tabs on your child's development at college. Keep in mind that no-one loves your child up to you need to do :-)

I used much the same technique in my book 'Math Is Cool- The Beginner's Help guide to Simple Algebra' and it works like a charm. Your child will succeed if one makes a decision to complete no matter what to improve your child's math grade. Well Guys, that's what's in my mind today. Be aware that Math is Cool!
