By Christopher Morris

Nobody wants to contract a dread disease but life nevertheless deals the cards at it sees fit. Being diagnosed with the big, ugly C is probably one of the worst nightmares of anyone. It is true that great advances have been made in treatment methods and medication, but there is certainly no cure yet. Nevertheless, modern medicine can make sure that patients are more comfortable and that they live longer. In their battle against cancer Vancouver CA patients need courage and help.

A positive diagnosis is always a huge shock. There are many stages to go through. First their is denial, then despair, followed by desperation and depression and finally, acceptance. This acceptance of the situation is vital because it is not possible to fight back if one denies the existence of something to fight against. The first line of defence will be to obtain detailed information about the prognosis.

Most patients have to change the way they live immediately. Smokers have to stop smoking and those abusing alcohol and other substances also have to understand that their habits have to change drastically. Most patients have to change their diets and they have to understand that the medication they are given often have complications that can lead to other conditions such as hypertension and a weakened immune system.

The majority of patients rely on their medical specialists to treat them. This treatment can be drastic, however, and radiation and chemo therapy, for example, can have many complications, leaving thee patient weak, tired and often ill. In some cases surgery can be performed. The fight facing these patients is to bear their discomfort, to remain positive and to faithfully follow the orders of their doctors.

Patients that can afford it and that are desperate often opt for fighting the disease by trying experimental treatment options or to seek treatment from renowned specialists. In some cases they will even travel abroad for this treatment. They know that experimental and unproven treatment methods can be very dangerous, but they are willing to take the chance because, for them, their are no other alternatives.

Many patients shun medical treatment methods and rather try one or more of the thousands of so called remedies that are almost always advertised as miracle cures. Even the most rudimentary internet search will reveal just how many such remedies there are. Many of them have been proven to be very dangerous but this does not seem to deter some patients. They are willing to fight and they accept that there are some risks.

A large percentage of patients rely on the prayers of their loved ones and their firm belief that their God can cure them. Some patients will seek help from faith healers and others will simply intensify their religious practices, believing that their own faith is enough to overcome the disease. For others, religion and spirituality is not a route to a cure, but rather to serenity, calm acceptance and a way in which to die in a state of grace.

Cancer is no joke. It is deadly and millions of people die of these dread diseases every year. There is hope, however. Ongoing research will, hopefully, soon result in significant gains against the fight. In the meantime, patients have to be strong.
